Do You Need Wide Shoes for Bunions?

Updated: Oct 14, 2024

Wide Shoes for bunions

Yes, wide shoes or regular shoes with a wide toe box are necessary if you have bunions. A wide toe area gives your toes room to spread out naturally allowing for the natural width of your foot. This puts less pressure in the bunion area. To further reduce friction that irritates bunions, choose shoes with stretchy material like leather or canvas. Arch supports are also helpful by providing the support your feet need and redistributing weight throughout the foot. This helps restore the natural alignment of your foot.  If you have bunions and continue to wear shoes that are too tight or do not distribute your weight, your bunion will get bigger. With wide shoes and arch support, you’re decreasing the chance of the bunion getting bigger and also reducing the pain caused by the bunion.

Sizing up is another option to help your shoes fit comfortably. For smaller bunions, sizing up half a size may be necessary. When using flexible orthotics you usually need to size up half to a full size to fit the orthotic in the shoe. Choose shoes with lower heels (less than 1-2 inches) to keep the weight of your foot more evenly spread. Stay away from shoes that are too narrow or pointed because they can put pressure on the bunions. Proper width and proper arch support in your shoes will help distribute weight evenly, alleviate pain and reduce the chance of bunion getting bigger.
